Does your pet often throw its hindquarters at your feet? Many people mistakenly believe that this is a sign of dominance. However, not only are they wrong, but this behavior is also very complex, as it has several meanings. Let's take a look at what they are!

When your dog sits or lies down at your feet, it creates very close contact, which always has a reason. And if you learn to interpret its signals correctly, you will do a lot to strengthen the relationship between you.

A meaningful gesture

1.) When they adore you

Let's start with the most obvious explanation: dogs sit at their owner's feet because they love them so much that they want to become one with them. This nonverbal communication clearly means that the person is important to them and they want to be as close to them as possible.

2.) It's warm

In many cases, they will sit like this even when their owner is sitting on the sofa, while they remain on the floor, snuggled up close to their owner's feet or even curled up on their feet. In this case, comfort may also play a role: your pet may prefer the texture of the carpet, or it may simply be warm and the floor is cooler than the soft, cushioned sofa.

3.) When your dog sits at your feet because he is guarding you

A strong protective instinct is also linked to love. Dogs protect their own. Lying at your feet, they are ready to jump up at any moment to protect you like a shield.

4.) You are an island of calm

Some dogs—still remaining strongly attached—seek their own calm by lying at their owner's feet. The person who is important to them represents both security and calm, so when they settle there, this feeling quickly spreads through them.

5.) Anxiety

However, just as you may crave comfort and security simply because you sometimes hug your loved ones, this desire can also be fueled by anxiety and fear. When something upsets them, makes them feel bad, or frightens them, many dogs try to find refuge by lying down at their owner's feet.

Our pets can also feel anxious

There are many signs of fear and stress, such as ears pinned back, tail tucked between the legs, panting, whimpering, or, in this case, cowering at your feet. If you notice these signs, try to calm the dog by petting it, speaking softly and kindly, and creating a calm environment around it. On the other hand, find out what triggered the reaction.

If your pet behaves like this frequently, it is recommended that you talk to your veterinarian or a therapist, as our four-legged friends are also at risk of mental illness, including persistent or separation anxiety and depression. These can also harm their physical health in the long term.

6.) Learned behavior

In the case of some animals, sitting on their owner's feet has become a habit. This learned behavior may stem from the fact that you interacted with the animal sooner when it sat next to or on your feet than in other situations: you started talking to it, petting its head, or scratching the base of its ears. The animal realized that it could get your attention with this tactic. This is one of the most important things for them, so they use it whenever they can.

Should you be concerned if your dog does not like to rest on your feet?

As you can see from the list, resting on your feet has more positive than negative connotations, so you may rightly wonder if it is a problem if your pet does not like to be close to you in this way. The answer is reassuring: no, not at all, as this is merely a form of body language. Your dog probably expresses its feelings towards you in other ways. It brings you its favorite toy, nuzzles your face in the morning, sits by the door waiting for you to come home, and so on.

Just like people, dogs are not all the same; they are all unique individuals with their own characteristics and behavioral traits. As their owner, you are the one who knows your four-legged friend best and understands their signals, even if they communicate with you without words.
