5 + 1 Things Dogs Hate: Never Do Them!

Although our shared history goes back thousands of years, there are still some human habits that make dogs climb walls. Moreover, we are not doing them any good for their healthy development. We have collected them.

Animal behavior expert Mychelle Blake has revealed the things dogs hate the most. And some of them are actually driven by the best intentions of their owners. Let's take a look at the mistakes you shouldn't make with your beloved pet!

1.) Don't hug!

Although hugging is a gentle way to express affection among humans, your pet may not be happy about this kind of "attack". Some animals will quietly tolerate an unpleasant approach, while others will simply become tense and will give signs of it.

The biggest problem is overly direct children: according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, most victims of dog attacks are young children. They see this as the reason that the little ones do not approach the animal appropriately; for example, they want to hug it. For this reason, it is very important to teach the little ones how to touch the dog - for which you also need to be aware of what dogs like and what they do not. We wrote in detail about how you can express your love to your pet in this article.

Many dogs don't like being hugged

2.) Approaching too directly

It is also very important to understand which forms of approach may be too much for a dog. Most dogs do not like having their faces touched, nor do they like sudden movements. In this case, they may even be startled by their owner, and they will react especially badly to strangers!

Furthermore, if they are not accustomed to procedures such as nail trimming, bathing or medical examinations, these situations can also trigger negative reactions from the animal. As we have often said, early socialization is extremely important for a dog's healthy and problem-free development!

Never suddenly reach out to a dog, especially if it is a stranger!

3.) Outdated Theory

Unfortunately, the now-outdated pack or dominance theory still holds true, according to which it is the owner's job to prove to his dog that he is the boss. As pack leaders, many people shout and treat the animal roughly, thus demonstrating their power and strength. A huge mistake! The theory has long been debunked, and there is no need to dominate your dog. On the other hand, this kind of treatment instills fear in him, which he may react to aggressively.

4.) Wrong reward method

Related to the previous point: many owners do not reward their pet with the right means, which is harmful to the dog. Overdoing delicious snacks, a taste of lunch, and especially a small treat are extremely harmful!

On the one hand, a large part of human food is unhealthy, and often downright toxic, for dogs. We hope everyone knows about chocolate, but raisins, grapes, and candies containing birch sugar all fall into this category; we have listed in more detail what you should not give your dog in this article.

Many foods, including chocolate, are toxic to dogs, and excessive snacking can lead to obesity

In addition, this kind of love is also harmful because of the extra pounds (kilograms!) that quickly accumulate. Instead, praise and petting, playing together and spending quality time together, such as a long walk or a trip, are what you are really doing him good with. Of course, you can train him with treats, but only in moderation, and really as part of training, counting the amount in the daily energy requirement!

5.) Inactivity

It is harmful for all dogs, but especially for high-energy breeds bred to work, to be condemned to inactivity. A dog that is not properly exercised can develop a number of problematic habits (destruction is a common one), and its health can suffer from this absolutely unhealthy lifestyle.

Walking is a necessity

It is also a misconception that smaller breeds do not need as much exercise as a large one! Just think of the Yorkshire Terrier, who – as its name suggests, being a terrier – is basically a working dog with a huge energy level! Likewise, a Dachshund will not be confined in the house!

In addition to walking, mental stimulation is very important. Play a lot, teach him tricks; tire him out both physically and mentally! This is also part of an active lifestyle.

+1.) Inconsistency

Another major mistake that dogs hate, and you'll catch yourself doing in the long run if you do it, is inconsistent behavior, which can show up in all areas of life.

Yesterday you ordered your dog off the couch, and today you're the one calling him to join you during the evening movie? Did you scold him for begging, then you lure him to the table with delicious treats? The last time you laughed when he chewed up your slippers as a game, and now you're fuming about it?

Well, this is the behavior that completely confuses the dog – and in the long run makes it completely impossible to set rules. The basis of teaching is clarity. The dog knows what you want from him, and it should also be clear what he is not allowed to do. And this should be set in stone and always sanctioned appropriately. If you laugh at him once, or even pat his head, he will store it as a positive. Other times, he will not understand why you are angry with him. It is clear what the problem is with this, right?!

Inconsistent training confuses the animal

Just like you at work or a small child at home, your dog needs clear boundaries. This way, he will know what he can do and what is forbidden for him. In this regard, it is important that all members of the family know these rules, because it is also confusing if you forbid a given thing, while someone else is vehemently encouraging the dog to do it.

If you take these tips into account, your relationship with your pet will be much more balanced and deeper - to the joy of both of you.
