The following video shows moments that could easily end in tragedy.

Our pets love to accompany us everywhere, and indoor dogs usually have free access to all rooms in the home, so they guard their owners in the kitchen too – or is it not so much the weight of their bodyguard role that they feel, but rather the smell of the delicacies being prepared? Indeed, this is often the magnetic force that keeps our four-legged friends captive. But, as we mentioned earlier, gluttony can have serious consequences.

Our pets are very resourceful when it comes to stealing food

If you watch the video, you will see almost exclusively cases that could have been prevented, given that the dog ate something that was dangerous for it.

There are many foods in the kitchen that are dangerous to dogs

As you can see, our furry friends are so resourceful that neither high counters nor food storage containers are an obstacle for them, and they end up eating anything they wouldn't normally get from their caring owners: salty, spicy, overly fatty foods, sweets, and often in large quantities. In the best case, this will only cause mild digestive problems, but if they consume something toxic – including foods containing cocoa, onions, alcohol, caffeine, or birch sugar (xylitol), as well as grapes and raisins – it can even be life-threatening.

Eating too quickly can also have serious consequences

Some dogs help themselves to extra food from their own food bowl, but this can be dangerous: overeating can lead to gastric distention and, in more serious cases, intestinal torsion, which can potentially be fatal.

How can you prevent your dog from stealing food?

As the examples show, dogs are incredibly resourceful and quick, so the safest thing to do is never leave any food out and store dog food in a container that your dog cannot open. In addition, training plays a huge role in this issue: it is most effective to train your pet from a very young age to only eat with permission, and of course, you should not allow them to eat from your plate. We know it's hard to resist those pleading eyes, and eating together is a way of expressing love, but in the case of our pets, it's better to find other ways to bond. Otherwise, situations like the ones we've seen can arise, and we have to be prepared for the possible consequences.
