On rainy, cooler autumn days, as well as in winter, it can be more difficult to walk your dog, especially if you want your dog to enjoy the walk too. We have compiled a list of things to watch out for when you are outside that may disturb your pet.
As temperatures drop and we can expect fog, rain, ground frost, and later on, prolonged cold weather and snow, walking your dog requires more careful planning. On the one hand, it matters when, how, and for how long you go out. Your pet's behavior may also indicate that they are uncomfortable spending time outside, but by following the precautions below, you can usually prevent your companion from feeling unwell.

One of the most important factors is that the dog should not be cold. To ensure this, some dogs may need a sweater or coat depending on their breed (short-haired, very thin, small-bodied), age (especially young or old dogs), and health (in case of chronic illness), while a raincoat is also an important accessory in rainy weather. Don't forget about visibility equipment for your safety.

However, it is important to note that unsuitable clothing – too tight, too loose, or perhaps the material or elements on it, such as zippers, that poke the dog – can also discourage the dog from going for a walk.
Similarly, you need to be prepared, especially if you have an elderly or sick pet, that their condition will make it more difficult for them to cope with physical exertion and, in some cases, they will be able to do less. Arthritis causes much more intense pain in cold weather, which also spoils the walking experience.

Changed terrain conditions – colder, frozen ground, sharp ice, slushy, wet roads – also change the comfort of walking and can even cause pain. Dog shoes can be a solution to this problem and provide protection for sensitive paws; dogs need to be gradually accustomed to wearing them, which is best started at home.
Weather conditions such as strong winds and heavy snowfall can also disturb the animal. In extreme weather conditions, it is not recommended to go on long trips, except for short breaks.

Signs that the dog is not enjoying the walk for some reason:
If you experience any of the above, consider which of the listed possibilities could be behind your pet's behavior. If it is just the wind bothering them or their clothing is unsuitable, it is easy to find a solution, but if you suspect there is a health reason behind the problem, consult your veterinarian.
