Although bathing is a favorite activity for many dogs, we need to pay special attention to how we care for them in winter. Cold, dry air can easily dry out our furry friends' skin, and improper bathing methods can even lead to colds.

While browsing the internet, we came across the following video, in which adorable dogs happily splash around in the water with their paws, wagging their tails happily. This short compilation perfectly shows that even simple things can bring them unadulterated happiness. In our article, we discuss what to pay attention to when bathing our pets in winter and how to ensure they can splash around safely even in the coldest months.

You need to be even more careful when bathing your dog in winter

While bathing your dog in summer is relatively carefree, you need to be much more careful in winter. The cold months can pose several risks: dogs can get cold more easily, and the dry air and cold weather cause their skin to dry out much faster. What's more, salt and chemicals spread on sidewalks in winter, as well as toxic residues from leaking coolant, can easily stick to dogs' paws and be dangerous if licked. Snow can also accumulate between the paw pads, causing discomfort or even frostbite to our four-legged friends. That is why it is even more important at this time of year to protect our pets' physical well-being with proper care, thorough drying, and conscious product selection.

Tips for bathing your dog in winter

Whether your furry friend is small or large, bathing them is never easy, and it can be particularly challenging in winter. Of course, it goes without saying that we can't use the garden hose at this time of year, so we have to resort to other solutions! If we follow the six steps below, our furry friends can stay healthy without any danger.

1.) Keep the apartment warm: Before bathing your dog, make sure that the apartment is pleasantly warm, because a wet dog may find a cold environment uncomfortable and may even catch a cold. You can even use a radiant heater to heat the room.

2.) Prepare a warm towel: It is particularly important to dry your dog quickly and thoroughly, so prepare a towel, which you can even warm up beforehand.

3.) Make sure the water temperature is right: It is recommended to bathe your pet in pleasantly lukewarm water at 32–36 °C, maintaining a consistent temperature, as cold or excessively hot water can be uncomfortable and even dangerous.

4.) Use moisturizing products: Choose a gentle, moisturizing dog shampoo that does not strip away natural oils. Only use shampoo intended for dogs, as products intended for humans have a different pH level that can dry out and irritate their skin.

5.) Dry your dog indoors: In summer, a walk can help them dry quickly, but in winter this can be quite dangerous. After bathing, thoroughly dry your four-legged friend and let them dry in a warm apartment.

6.) Try bath-free alternatives: Of course, bathing is not always necessary. You can use dry shampoo, wet wipes for paws and sensitive areas, or a protective balm that helps remove salt and moisturizes the paws.

The skin of older dogs is particularly sensitive, so it often requires more care. If you feel that your pet has difficulty tolerating bathing or may have skin irritation, be sure to consult your veterinarian to rule out any health problems.
