Few dog breeds observe the world with as much enthusiasm and curiosity as the golden retriever. For them, every new smell, movement or living being is an exciting discovery – and it is precisely this friendly curiosity that makes them one of the most lovable breeds.
The best-known characteristic of the golden retriever is their friendly, open nature. The dog seen in the video, Baker, perfectly embodies everything for which so many people love goldies. We could also say that they are a textbook example of golden retrievers: they observe lizards with the cautious curiosity of a natural scientist, following bees, birds and other living beings.

The golden retriever was originally bred as a retrieving hunting dog: their task was not to flush out game, but to bring the shot animal back to the hunter unharmed. This task required not only a good sense of smell and endurance, but also a balanced temperament and a cooperative nature. They are the ones who would not harm even a fly; among other things, this attitude makes them perhaps the most popular family dog of today.
In puppyhood, this curiosity is especially strong. For young dogs, every encounter is a new experience: a moving lizard, a little bee, a chirping bird or a fish swimming in water are all exciting discoveries. However, it is often observed in golden retrievers that they carry out this exploration with an endlessly friendly attitude, so that they do not harm the other animal even by accident. They are the ones who would greet even a burglar with a wagging tail, so we do not recommend this breed as a guard dog – but they would certainly win the prize for best four-legged friend at any competition.
It is often said that goldies are like grown-up children: often playful and unruly, but extremely intelligent as well. They learn quickly, and in addition they are hungry for stimuli and information: for them, the world is full of interesting things and every new encounter is an opportunity to learn even more about their environment.
