The dogs featured in the article can be ideal companions even for first-time owners, as they are easy to train, kind, and possess a good temperament.
Nevertheless, it is very important to emphasise that there is no such thing as a dog that does not bark, takes up little space, does not require much time, and whose coat care consists merely of one brushing per week. These are living beings who need our care and attention. They must be guided along the rocky road to becoming an adult dog, and later we must remain by their side just the same as the years pass and their little muzzles become increasingly grey. In short, dog ownership is a serious commitment lasting 10-15 years, and this remains true even if the selected breed is easier to handle. Let us immediately take a look at the list of easy-to-keep dogs!

Also known as the dwarf spitz, they are the smallest size variation of the German Spitz. They are often seen trotting beside elegant young ladies, who certainly know something! Despite appearances, this fox-faced, smiling, fluffy little dog is a truly fiery and hardy little creature, full of life and confidence, always happy and jaunty. They are an excellent companion dog, but also function well as an alert dog, as they are especially attentive and distrustful of strangers. However, there is no trace of timidity or aggression in them.
They learn quickly and are intelligent, always loving to remain close to their owner. It should be kept in mind that although they belong among easy-to-keep dogs, they tolerate loneliness poorly. They also feel perfectly at home as city dogs, but relative to their size they require exercise and play. They get on excellently with children and other pets as well, provided they have been properly socialised. Their dense coat requires daily brushing. We admit, they are one of our personal favourites.

These dogs were bred centuries ago in the palace of the Chinese emperor, where they spent many years living the easy life of noble lap warmers. This proved incredibly beneficial for them, because they understand and sense every little human emotion, they are affectionate, kind, and full of love, of which there is enough for everyone. A Shih Tzu is happiest when they can be with their family. Due to their small size, they also belong among dogs that are easy to keep in a flat. Fortunately, a well-socialised Shih Tzu adapts to changing circumstances with playful ease, so it will not cause a problem if we wish to take them everywhere with us.
They love children very much and also get on well with other pets. Their coat can be kept long, which fully develops by around 1 year of age, but we may also choose a shorter style, which does not require daily brushing. Although we would not call their nose flattened, it is definitely shorter in type, which means care must be taken during summer so that the animal does not overheat.

The Whippet is an incredibly friendly, warm-hearted, quiet creature whose everything is their owner and family. Since they are a sighthound, exercise is extremely important to them, so they are recommended only for dog owners who are sporty and for whom one hour of intensive daily activity with their canine companion is not difficult. However, if the Whippet receives this, they will spend the remainder of the day resting in the flat or following what the household members are doing. Since their prey drive instinct is highly refined, they should only be walked on a lead. They may only be let off in places that are properly fenced.
The little English sighthound can be an ideal companion for active owners, but attention must be paid to the fact that they struggle with loneliness. However, if they have been properly socialised and trained, we need not fear that they will place us in an awkward situation wherever we take them. Due to their low body fat percentage and short coat, attention must be paid to warm, comfortable clothing during colder seasons.

For owners with less experience, we definitely recommend the miniature, dwarf, or toy size. The Poodle is full of fire, full of character, and full of charm. One of the canine world’s most intelligent dogs, they adore exercise, fun, and sport. They greatly appreciate receiving plenty of attention, love to show off, and therefore tricks can also be taught to them very easily. They are never aggressive, are a very easy-to-handle dog, and are extremely people-oriented; it is no coincidence that they are so frequently used as therapy and assistance dogs.
The Poodle loves children and is patient with them, and they also adapt well to the rhythm of elderly people, provided their needs are not forgotten. Their fur requires daily, regular care; however, an advantage may be that they hardly shed at all. Their coat grows like human hair, so they must regularly be taken to a groomer.

We also have personal experience with the Bernese Mountain Dog, because we work in an office with a very good boy named Benji. They are as calm as a monk, never pushy, but always greatly appreciate petting and kind words – from anyone, which is why they are not really suitable as a guard dog. The Bernese Mountain Dog is an excellent family dog, with no trace of aggression, and they get on wonderfully with children as well. They like having tasks and receiving attention; naturally, they also require exercise and walks, but if we are busy, they patiently lounge around and wait their turn.
Due to their enormous size, they feel best in a house with a garden, but if we have enough time to walk with them in nature and along the streets, they will not suffer in a flat either. A great advantage of the Bernese Mountain Dog is that they adapt easily to almost every lifestyle. Because of their dense and silky coat, summers may pose a greater challenge for them, so during the warmer months we should ensure that we only set out with them during cooler hours.

Despite the limited space, we tried to highlight the most important characteristics of the listed breeds in as much detail as possible; however, we encourage you not to make your decision based solely on this! Before choosing a breed, always gather information from several relevant sources, and even more importantly, from several breeders! A responsible expert will inform you about the possible disadvantages of the given breed and will also honestly tell you whether, based on your lifestyle and possibilities, they consider you suitable for keeping the breed.
