Dogs love being scratched: they kick, growl, and pull funny faces to show their happiness. But why do they react this way, and where is the best place to scratch them?

Our four-legged friends enjoy being stroked, but scratching is especially special for them. Tiny ticklish touches felt behind the ears, on certain points of the neck, or along the back bring them genuine joy. Some dogs start kicking with their hind legs at such moments, others stretch out or make small sounds of pleasure. In our article, we also explain why they react this way and how to find their favourite spot to make them truly happy.

The owner’s “magnificent seven”

Dogs usually have favourite spots where they particularly enjoy being scratched. These areas not only bring them happiness but also help reduce stress and strengthen the bond with their owner. However, always pay attention to the animal’s body language and focus on areas that are comfortable for them.

Generally, there are seven key spots worth knowing:

  • Chest: A safe place where they can be calmly stroked.
  • Under the chin, around the neck: A pleasant area, especially for more timid dogs.
  • Base of the tail: A spot that is difficult for them to reach, similar to the middle of their back.
  • Under the collar: Also sensitive and hard to access.
  • Shoulders: A comfortable place for massage and scratching. When touched here, the dog does not feel vulnerable.
  • Behind the ears: An area rich in nerve endings; scratching it has a calming effect and releases endorphins.
  • Belly: A very sensitive area, so only stroke it if your companion invites it.

This is why dogs may kick while being scratched

The scratching reflex is an involuntary sequence of movements that serves to protect dogs from fleas, ticks and other irritants. Your companion’s ticklish spot is actually formed by a bundle of nerves beneath the skin. When you scratch your furry friend’s belly and hit this spot, these nerves are activated and send a message via the spinal cord to the hind leg to start kicking – this is how they attempt to remove the source of irritation.

However, this does not necessarily mean that your dog does not enjoy being scratched there. You can always determine from their body language how pleasant the experience is for them.

And here is the special spot: The ear

Due to the special sensitivity of dogs’ ears, ear scratching is particularly enjoyable for them. The network of nerves found in the ear is connected to the internal organs and transmits impulses throughout the body, which is why touch has such a powerful effect on them. Stroking the ear releases endorphins in the brain, which relax and make the dog happy, while fulfilling their need for human attention and affection. At the same time, we can also say that our four-legged companions can be quite selective, as they will not accept this wonderful experience from just anyone.

We’ve brought you an Instagram video in which the dogs will do almost anything for these happy moments; each of them reacts differently to the scratching offered by their owners. Warning: extremely cute moments ahead!
