In summer, storms with strong winds are common, and they can cause a lot of damage, but they can also take their toll on our bodies. Dogs also need more attention at this time.

Most dogs are afraid of storms, as they find the phenomenon inexplicable. And when the whistling, door-slamming gale is accompanied by thunder, lightning and torrential rain, most dogs lose faith and flee in disbelief.

But let's look at what you can do if your little friend is scared of a windstorm

During storms, we dog owners need to be extra cautious and put safety first, as adverse weather conditions can pose a threat not only to us humans, but also to our little friends. However, with proper preparation and awareness, staying at home and walking can be made safe and enjoyable.

Scroll down for our helpful tips!

1) Take him to safety

If you find yourself in a storm with your four-legged companion, the best thing to do is to take him indoors immediately. This could be indoors, a sturdy dog house, or a sturdy shipping crate to protect your little one from the elements. If you don't act in time, he may run away in fright, which is dangerous in more ways than one, so make sure you prepare for such situations early if you can.

2) Chip for proper identification

We put it at the top of the line for a reason. While it is now standard practice for all dogs to be chipped, their presence can increase the chances of returning home safely in the event of an escape. However, it is essential that you always report any changes to your details to your vet, who can update the database.

3) Try to suppress noise, increase the sense of security

If your pet is afraid of the sound of the wind - and is not, of course, snarling teeth and glaring eyes and hiding in a corner where even you can't reach him - speak softly and try to calm his anxiety. I can confirm the effectiveness of this from my own experience.

Let me tell you briefly: when I was a child we had a Hungarian Vizsla, Jerry. Yes, after Jerry the Mouse, from Tom and Jerry, because this fairy tale was one of my favourites. Anyway, Jerry was afraid of all extreme weather conditions. In the event of a storm, he would run headlong from everything and everyone, and make himself as unavailable as possible. If we approached him, we were greeted by snarling teeth and flashing eyes.

Soothe him with soft music, we can even play guitar if we can

As well as soft talking, gentle stroking can help, and a room where there is as little outside noise as possible can help. Other solutions include soft music, radio, TV, or even the hum of a household appliance. You can also use this time to start a delayed wash.

4.) Always walk him on a leash, especially in windy weather

Overall, in extreme weather conditions, it is recommended to avoid going outside. But if you do go for a walk - and you must - keep your pet on a lead when you do go for a walk, whether he is scared or not! At any time he could be frightened by the noise of the gusts of wind, run away and, if in an unfamiliar area, get lost or injured in the storm. In such weather, avoid old trees for easily broken branches, old houses for falling tiles, and also try to stay away from electricity of any kind. If you can't hide, run indoors and lightning strikes, crouch down on the ground until the storm passes, but under no circumstances lie down, and don't stand under a tree seeking shelter. However, it is best not to take your dog for a walk at this time; make bathroom breaks as quick as possible.

If our tips don't work and you're worried about your dog's behaviour, make sure you see your vet to check if there's another problem. The vet can give advice, suggest sedatives and methods, or refer you to a behaviourist for help if necessary.
