Fortunately, the dog was rescued from the burning house, but the four-legged friend did not look for the door first, but for his leash – and his rescuer had no choice but to follow him.
House fires are not only caused by carelessness or negligence; a faulty electronic device or a mischievous pet can also cause accidents. The worst thing is when this happens at a time when the owner is unable to help their pet, so the animal's safety depends on the attentiveness and responsibility of the neighbors, as well as the police and firefighters who arrive on the scene. Fortunately, thanks to Oakley's rescuer, the protagonist of the following story escaped the fire unharmed. What's more, the story even has a humorous twist, as the dog refused to leave without his leash – a truly well-behaved, rule-abiding four-legged friend!
The Aurora Illinois Police Department released the full recording, and the video below is an excerpt from the rescue:
Oakley lives in Aurora, Illinois, with his family, who adopted the 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier from a local shelter when he was still a puppy. According to his owners, the dog loves to relax, have fun, sunbathe, and he's not one to turn down treats, especially peanut butter. One of his favorite activities is cuddling with his two-legged friends, and he snores very loudly when he sleeps—but his owners love him just the way he is and are very grateful to the police officer who rescued their beloved pet.
When the fire started, no one else was home except Oakley. The authorities arrived quickly at the scene, and Michael Ely rushed into the house, breaking down the door. The police officer's body camera recorded the events, and the video shows that the fire had not yet reached the lower level, but smoke was already billowing through the rooms. Ely looked into every room, and in one of them, Oakley looked him in the eye.
Oakley was in one of the rooms, and the door was wide open in front of him—only a dog fence blocked his path, which the well-trained dog could probably have easily jumped over, but he didn't. He became quite excited when he saw the police officer, but fortunately he was not afraid of him—in fact, as soon as the man let him out of the room, he ran to his leash, looking back to see if his rescuer was following him. He sat down and waited patiently for his leash to be put on, then followed Ely, who led him out of the house, without any apparent pulling or other difficulties.
Although it is not known exactly what caused the fire, they were able to say that it was not arson and that it probably started in the attic. Fortunately, Oakley was nowhere near it, so he escaped unharmed.
It is always a joy when we can safely return a family member—even if it is on four legs—to their loved ones,
People magazine quotes the police department.
Oakley's behavior may seem strange, but if we understand how our pets work, we realize that there is actually an explanation for it. Routine is very important for dogs—if Oakley's owners always took him for walks on a leash, he learned that when they go for a walk and leave the apartment, a leash is an essential accessory. It is also possible (although we have not found any sources to support this) that Oakley's owners regularly hire a dog walker, which is why he led the police officer so excitedly to his leash. Whatever the case, the important thing is that no one was hurt!
