A few weeks ago, police found a dog – a golden doodle and miniature poodle mix – tied to a baggage scale at Harry Reid International Airport after passengers reported the incident. The animal’s owner was stopped at the boarding gate.

The story of the little dog left at the airport ultimately ended happily; however, it paints a dark picture of human cruelty and irresponsibility.

JetBlue:

The owner deliberately left her dog tied to the airport baggage scale

In footage taken of the incident, it can be clearly seen that the woman walks to the ticket counter with her dog, then after speaking with airline staff, leaves while the dog remains tied on a lead to the weighing device. During the investigation it was revealed that airline employees informed the passenger that if she wished to take her pet on board as a service dog, she had to complete the required paperwork. She did not complete the paperwork; however, she was issued a boarding pass. After receiving it, she immediately headed towards the boarding gate – now without the dog – where police later found her in order to hold her accountable.

“When asked why she had left the dog alone, she claimed that the airline would not have allowed her to travel with the dog, and said that the dog had a tracking device on him – implying that it was therefore acceptable to leave the animal alone because he would be able to return to her,” the Las Vegas police stated, adding that the woman “behaved in a hostile manner and resisted officers’ actions”. She was later charged with the latter offence.

In a Facebook post, the police emphasised that they cannot believe they even have to say this, but under no circumstances should we leave our dog alone at the airport! If a situation arises in which we are uncertain, we should ask staff for help or information.

What became of JetBlue?

Authorities named the 2-year-old dog JetBlue after the airline, and following the incident he was taken into the care of Animal Protective Services for 10 days, the mandatory period. As the owner did not return for him, a charitable organisation took over the animal. Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas announced that they were flooded with adoption applications; several hundred were submitted regarding JetBlue.

Despite the abandonment, JetBlue has shown only love. He is kind, gentle, and incredibly social. He greets everyone with trust and warmth, which is truly remarkable in light of what happened. The support from our community has been overwhelming — we received countless applications and enquiries from families who want to give him the life he deserves,”said Danielle Roth, founder of Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas, to 8 News Now.

JetBlue with his new owner:

That JetBlue’s story ultimately ended happily was largely thanks to an officer of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Skeeter Black, who officially adopted the dog.

“LVMPD officer Skeeter Black and his family had been working since September 2025 to adopt a golden doodle with the assistance of Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas. After their application had already been approved months earlier, they were chosen as JetBlue’s new permanent home. Bon voyage, JetBlue, and welcome to a new life where Officer Black and his family will surround you with love beyond words,” LVMPD wrote in an update on X.
