Even the doctor thought it was impossible for the skinny dog to ever get back on his feet, but Rocky proved the prediction wrong—thanks to the persistent animal rescuers. The video shows how far the beautiful husky mix has come.

Unfortunately, there is no end to the sad stories of animals that have suffered a harsh fate, been neglected, or, in the worst cases, abused. A small ray of hope is that some of these stories have a happy ending: the dog is rescued, its wounds are treated, its belly is filled, and its soul is nurtured until its future owner arrives. Not all animals are so "lucky," and many never receive care or love in their entire lives. Still, we believe that change can be achieved through cooperation, and that by saving even one animal, we can make the world a better place! Meet Rocky, the rescued husky mix who was literally brought back from the brink of death by dedicated animal rescuers. The barely one-year-old, literally skinny dog lived locked in a cage and had never been outside in his life.

He was nearly starved to death

As revealed in a video by an organization called The Asher House, Rocky was the dog in the worst condition they had ever taken into their care. The large husky mix weighed only 28 pounds (12 kilograms). The veterinarian was not optimistic about his chances of survival and gave him minimal chance of staying alive. "It's too late," he said when he saw the dog. However, the dedicated animal rescuers decided to do everything they could for the beautiful young animal. As they put it, they saw the will to live in his eyes—hidden behind endless fear; even through the video, it is clear that fear dominated the animal's every movement.

Not only was Rocky starving, but he had clearly been abused—he was particularly afraid of men—and was covered in wounds. It is heartbreaking to see how someone could treat an animal this way! As it turned out, the dog had been living in a cramped cage and had most likely never been let out. Everything and everyone was new and unfamiliar to him, and at the same time frightening.

They were prepared for anything

When his carers first put him on a leash, he stood still and only began to walk after persistent coaxing. Although he was very distrustful, he still followed his rescuers. When it was time to put him in the car, they were afraid he might bite, but he tolerated it well. The animal rescuer was shocked that such a large dog was so light. Every bone in his body was visible, his ribs stuck out, his legs were like trembling sticks... The day after he was rescued, he calmed down a little, but he still did not relax around people, for understandable reasons.

Among 30 dogs

A week later, Rocky had grown strong enough to begin socialization. His adoptive animal rescuer chose an unusual but apparently effective method: he introduced the husky to the other rescued dogs. And that meant not just one or two, but around 20-30 dogs! Rocky first got to observe the pack through a glass wall, but later that day he was able to get up close and personal with them. The other four-legged friends were very happy about this and sniffed their new buddy from head to toe. The husky wasn't quite as enthusiastic, but he tolerated the commotion. Then it was time for his first walk, still on a leash.

Here is the promised recording of Rocky's first steps in this new chapter of his life:

The animal rescuer drew attention in a hushed voice to the paws covered in wounds, which had undoubtedly touched grassy ground for the first time. It appeared that this dog had never been outdoors before, nor had it encountered other animals. In addition to introducing Rocky to freedom, the man also wanted to show him how other dogs behave and how a loving relationship between a dog and a human can work. These were completely new experiences for the young dog.

There were places where they were rejected

The next time, Rocky was let off the leash so he could freely get to know the dog life and his fellow dogs. They were very eager to include the newcomer in their games, but they had to wait a little longer. For now, it was wonderful to see the husky walking on his own, and he had already gained some weight. Although it will probably take more time for him to make friends, the process of healing has begun. This is all the more remarkable given that Rocky had previously been rejected by another shelter, which said that his condition made it impossible to "bring him back" to a level where he could ever fit into the community. Fortunately, he was given the chance to try again.

A new life began

Rocky was almost completely transformed in his new, loving environment. Persistent and patient work paid off, and the dog integrated with the other rescued animals, as we can see in the video below:

It's good to see how cheerfully and freely he plays with the pack.
