Poodle

As we know, urban living has a huge impact on animal husbandry. Below, we have collected the breeds of dogs that are most popular with city dwellers.

The list is based on the American Kennel Club statistics for 2024. Each state has a top 5 list, and interestingly, the breeds are often the same, only their position on the podium varies. Thus, the following breeds made it into the top city dogs:

  1. French Bulldog
  2. Golden Retriever
  3. Labrador Retriever
  4. Poodle
  5. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  6. German Shepherd
  7. English Bulldog
  8. Cane Corso
  9. Rottweiler
  10. Dachshund
  11. Bichon Havanese
  12. Welsh Corgi Pembroke
  13. Great Dane

There are some breeds that are consistently popular, and which are on all the popularity lists. So it's no surprise that the French bulldog, golden retriever, Labrador, German shepherd and dachshund are among the best-selling city dogs.

It is notable, however, that giants such as the Great Dane or the Cane Corso are also among the nominees. And of the smaller breeds, only a few are represented.

There Are Basic Rules for Urban Dogs

As we all know, trends are influenced by many things, and dog ownership is no different. Often it's a hit film or book that makes a breed popular, while other times it's celebrity pets that set the pace. But never choose a dog on that basis!

What's important, whether you live in the countryside, in the suburbs or in the city centre, is to take stock of your living conditions: your leisure time, your financial situation, your housing conditions. The first two may even veto dog ownership itself. If you don't have enough time or money to provide all the necessary equipment and care for your future pet, it's better not to go ahead with the decision.

The size of your home will also determine which breed you can share your life with. In a smaller home, smaller breeds will obviously have enough room to move around, but providing enough exercise and the right amount of physical and mental activity for a small dog is also essential. Likewise, even if you have a garden, it is not enough to let the dog out or keep it there: you need to provide walks and mental challenges!

The most popular urban dogs, and all similar lists, are rather interesting statistical data, but it is of utmost importance that such trends do not determine the decisions of prospective owners.
