Summer has finally arrived, and with it the fruit season. It's worth taking a look at which fruits your dog can eat and which ones he shouldn't.
Let's start with the earliest delicacy, strawberries. This delicious summer fruit is safe for your dog to eat. Always make sure that you introduce only small amounts of anything new into your pet's diet and check that it doesn't cause any complaints.
Cherries and soon also sour cherries are ripening, which can also be eaten by dogs, but of course only when they are seeds and only a few grains, otherwise you can expect digestive complaints, including abdominal bloating and diarrhoea.
If you have a cherry or sour cherry tree in your garden, be especially careful that your pet doesn't help itself to the fruit from the tree or swallow the seeds that fall to the ground. This can cause serious and even life-threatening intestinal blockages.
It's important to know that cherries are a particularly stomach-churning fruit, while many people can't eat sour cherries because of their acidity. These should also be taken into account for the animal.
Both peaches and nectarines are safe for dogs, but only a few slices per occasion to prevent stomach upset. Again, care should be taken with the seeds, and these fruits already have a high sugar content and should be avoided if you have diabetes.
The king of summer fruits is watermelon, which your dog can eat seedless and peeled unless there are any health contraindications. The main problem is the high sugar content, but some people also have digestive problems. If your pet doesn't have any complaints, offer him a few bites first, and if he doesn't seem to have a problem, you can introduce him to your diet as a refreshing snack. Its high water content also helps to keep you properly hydrated, but again we stress the importance of moderation!
The high sugar content of cantaloupe and sweet melon can also be a problem, but otherwise dogs can eat small amounts.
Berries such as raspberries, currants and blueberries can also be given to dogs.
Although apples are available all year round, there are some varieties that are specifically summer varieties. Most owners know that they can safely feed their pets apples, but there is a belief that the seeds are poisonous. Apple seeds can only cause serious problems if eaten in extremely large quantities, so there is no need to worry about ingesting one or two seeds.
