some chemicals can pose a risk to other animals, including pets. Snail killer poison is also toxic to dogs.
As the Hungarian Hedgehog Friendly Foundation has pointed out in a tragic case, slug worms can be harmful to plants, animals – including dogs – and humans.
Unfortunately, the hedgehog found was beyond the help of the animal welfare officials; his death was clearly caused by snail venom, based on the symptoms. As they say, most of these substances contain metaldehyde. In the case of poisoning, there is no antidote and, as in this case, even with immediate medical intervention, it can be fatal not only for hedgehogs but also for dogs, cats and even humans. Especially small children should be very careful not to eat the poison!
Symptoms of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, hypertension (high blood pressure), restlessness, tremors and, over time, seizures.
The severity of poisoning depends on the amount ingested, factors affecting absorption (such as stomach contents) and, as with all poisonings, the individual sensitivity and health of the animal.
Only immediate, intensive medical care is the best chance of recovery, so even if you suspect the presence of a poison, get your animal to the clinic as soon as possible!
Instead of using these types of poisons, the Foundation urges everyone to choose a more environmentally friendly and safer solution.
