American Bulldogs are balanced, athletic dogs who are strong, resilient, agile, and friendly.

History

The American Bulldog is a dog with a powerful build, originally serving as a working farm dog and guardian of the family. It is believed that the breed was present in the United States as early as the 1700s. It primarily assisted in the capturing of escaped cattle and pigs, with its use particularly widespread on farms in the southern states. During the first and second world wars, American Bulldogs were pushed to the brink of extinction, but fortunately, a few individuals survived on farms in the southern states. The re-breeding effort is credited to John D. Johnson and Alan Scott, who, recognizing the breed's excellent abilities, played a significant role in increasing the breed's population and reintroducing the dogs.

Breed standard

The American Bulldog is a strong, muscular, and athletic dog, characterized by being resilient, agile, alert, and friendly. Their physique enables them to fulfill their tasks with 100% efficiency: they can catch escaped livestock or even wild boars, and thanks to their strength, they can bring down these animals to prevent further escape. Males are typically slightly larger, measuring 56-64 centimeters, while females range from 51-58 centimeters. There is no standard weight defined for the breed since the dog's proportionate appearance is more important, but on average, a male weighs between 34-45 kilograms, and a female weighs between 27-36 kilograms.

The base color of the breed is white, with black, brown, fawn, red, or brindle patches. Their coat is short, and the texture can range from very soft to coarse.

Character

The American Bulldog is loyal, reliable, brave, determined, and confident, with a strong protective instinct. It is often referred to as a gentle giant.

The breed is intelligent and trainable, but it can also be stubborn. Therefore, early socialization and puppy training are essential. Rules and routines should be established as the dog grows. A firm yet loving hand is needed to teach the American Bulldog boundaries and ensure they are respected. It is not recommended for novice owners.

Ideal environment

American Bulldogs are typically cheerful, family-oriented dogs who thrive in homes with ample space for their free movement.

A large, fenced yard is almost essential for such an energetic dog, although exercise needs can vary from individual to individual. They can adapt well to urban environments if they receive enough walks, but they also make excellent jogging companions.

However, they do not enjoy being left alone for long periods or being confined in an apartment. If their physical and mental stimulation needs are not met, destructive behavior may develop due to boredom.

When well-trained, they get along well with children and other pets, although supervision is always important.

Care

Caring for an American Bulldog is relatively easy. Regular brushing helps maintain clean and shiny coat; bathing is only necessary when the dog gets very dirty.

Trimming the nails every few weeks and cleaning the ears monthly (or as needed) is advisable to prevent inflammation. Regular teeth brushing is also recommended.

Common health problems

The American Bulldog is generally a very healthy breed, provided that its living conditions are suitable, and the owner ensures quality nutrition, regular veterinary check-ups, and important vaccinations. Due to its size, attention should be paid to the hip and elbow joints.

Like most breeds, inherited disorders can occur in American Bulldogs, but these can be prevented with responsible breeding and necessary genetic screenings.
